Reference Weight
The absolute mass of a textile material measured after the total removal of all hygroscopic moisture provides the foundation for chemical and physical analysis. Calculating the bone dry mass involves heating the flax or yarn in a controlled environment until the weight stabilizes. This figure excludes all water that the fibers naturally absorb from the atmosphere, allowing for a neutral baseline when comparing different batches.
It is the essential denominator in moisture regain calculations.
Measurement Protocol
Technicians place samples in a drying oven at a constant temperature until every trace of unbonded water evaporates. The process continues until two consecutive weighings, taken at a set interval, produce identical results. This ensures that the remaining substance consists only of the fiber polymers and any non-volatile additives.
Once this state is reached, the material is extremely hygroscopic and must be weighed in airtight containers to prevent moisture gain.
Economic Impact
Trading partners rely on this value to settle contracts where the final price depends on a standardized moisture regain percentage. The bone dry mass allows a buyer to pay for the actual fiber content rather than for varying amounts of water trapped in the bales. Discrepancies in mill humidity would lead to financial disputes without this fixed point.
